The Importance Of Early Childhood Dental Care

Read Transcript

Pediatric dentistry is an area that I really love, probably because I have two young ones at home. I have a five year old and a one year old. My approach is I'm never going to say that I'm going to get my pediatric patient numb. I'm going to wiggle your cheek and I'm going to sing your tooth to sleep. I'm never going to drill on your tooth. I'm going to draw a picture on your tooth and that picture can be anything that you change. Whether or not it's an Avenger or a Captain America shield, a princess tiara.

I've had many requests and I think that, one, makes the child feel very, very comfortable. Two, their super excited to see the end product. They stay very nice and still because they have to be still like paper if I'm going to draw on their tooth. I think it's a matter of giving it a different approach. It's more of a distraction technique that allows me to, one, get your child numb. Two, to get rid of the cavity and place the filling why all thinking, to the child that, their getting this really awesome picture drawn on their tooth. That's the way that I approach it and it's been working really well with kids.

Getting your child the dental care they need early in life is important for long-term oral health. Our team can help you make sure your child’s teeth are developing correctly, help them prevent major issues, and generally help them maintain a beautiful, healthy smile. Regular dental maintenance is just as important for children as it is for adults … maybe even more so!

We can also help your child develop a good relationship with dental health care and prevent many cases of dental fear or anxiety. By getting your child used to visiting the dentist at an early age, they will be less likely to develop a discomfort with it later in life. We can make sure your child has a great dental care experience.

What Their Visit Will Be Like

Your child’s first visit to our dental office will be fun and stress-free for your child! When you arrive at our dental office, your child will be greeted by smiling faces. We will check his or her mouth for signs of problems. We offer stuffed animals for them to hold, toys to play with, and chances to take home fun prizes like glow bracelets and helium balloons. We work hard to make your child’s visit to our office as enjoyable as possible.

Also for the kids, we have something called the Cavity Free Club! Being a member of this club, your child can win prizes and have their picture posted on our Facebook page (with your permission, of course!). This is a great opportunity for your child to focus on maintaining great oral health and have fun while doing it!

Common Childhood Dental Problems

When you bring your child in to see us regularly, we can help prevent common childhood dental problems or offer early treatment. These common problems include cavities, issues related to thumb sucking, and more. We can use cavity detectors and tooth-colored fillings to solve any small decay issue before it becomes a larger problem, and we can offer oral appliance therapy for prolonged thumb sucking. Talk to our team if you need help with any childhood dental concern. We will be happy to assist you.
