Tooth Fillings

Is your tooth causing you pain or sensitivity? Have you been told you need a filling? Our Kansas City, MO dentists offer tooth fillings that are both strong and aesthetically pleasing. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

Needing a Tooth Filling

Tooth fillings are needed in just one situation: you get a cavity. A cavity is a small area of decay that has not yet grown to be big enough to justify the use of a dental crown. Cavities and other decay are caused by the harmful bacteria in the mouth. They can often be prevented by high-quality home hygiene and routine professional care. Cavities are best filled when small, as they can grow larger and require a more extensive dental restoration. If you think you may have a cavity or simply have not seen a dental health care professional in more than six months, please give us a call.

Tooth Filling Options

Here at Dental Care Center of South Kansas City, we use only tooth-colored filling materials. This is because these options are now strong enough that the ugly metal amalgam fillings of the past are not needed anymore. We offer both composite resin and glass ionomer fillings. Both filling material options are aesthetically pleasing and will blend right in with your natural smile.

The only effective difference between the two materials is strength. Composite resin fillings tend to be more durable and are better for load-bearing areas of the teeth. Glass ionomer fillings seal better and are great for areas of the teeth near the gumline. Both types can be used in combination in your mouth depending on your specific needs. As mentioned above, they are both aesthetically pleasing and will look great in your mouth.

How A Filling Is Placed

Both composite resin and glass ionomer fillings are placed in a similar way. First, all decayed tooth material is removed. The tooth is then cleaned, dried, and prepared for the filling. The filling material is then flowed into the area and shaped appropriately. After the filling is positioned and shaped, it is hardened with a special light.

Once the filling is hardened, we are able to polish it to perfection. At this point, the filling will blend in with the natural appearance of the tooth. This process is easy and painless thanks to a local anesthetic.
